Mushroom Cloud at Sunset

Mushroom Cloud at Sunset

A visual update on the Ray May fire burning over 2500 acres, now halfway between Gardnerville and Topaz Lake in the Eastern Sierra near the California border. When you see forces like this in person, it's amazing that we even attempt to alter their course.

I'm at Topaz Lake, about 8-9 miles from the fire and it's heading this way, but before it reaches here there would be an epic battle to save the neighborhoods and homes north and east of Holbrook Junction.

Fire is part of the natural cycle across the American West. Nitrogen is returned to the soil, germinating a new generation of trees and fertilizing prolific growth of wildflowers.

"Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life."
— John Muir (A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf)
