Mothercare has reported challenging trading in the UK but remains optimistic that the measures they have taken to combat tough conditions will pay off.
The maternity specialist posted a 4.3 percent like-for-like (LFL) sales dip in the UK, excluding VAT, in the first quarter when total domestic revenues overall fell 1.8 percent. Group sales advanced 4.9 percent, helped by a 15.2 percent increase in international turnover in the period to 9 July.
Mothercare is now focusing on expansion into Latin America with store openings in Chile later this year which will add to their total of 1,289 stores across 55 coutries.
Ian Peacock, chairman, said: "In the UK the trading environment remains difficult and competitive, however our property restructure and cost reduction programme are progressing well."
