British department store Debenhams looks to Sears for US expansion.
The two retailers are said to be in early discussions over a franchise agreement in which Debenhams would open a number of concessions throughout the Sears chain.
Debenhams currently has 60 franchised store globally and is looking to increase this number to 100, as it expands beyond its domestic market.
Cracking the American market has proved difficult for Britain’s largest retail institutions- both Marks & Spencer and Tesco have struggled to make their mark in the States, but Debenhams may have the introduction they need under the household name of Sears.
In February Sears Holdings Corporation, which also owns part of the Kmart chain, told shareholders it is “looking at adding world-class third-party retailers to our space.” The company has already signed franchise agreements with Forever 21, Whole Foods and Lands’ End.
